How to Take Your Boat Out of Storage

The Sun is starting to feel warm, and the snow is melting. It’s easy to imagine warm summer days spent on your boat out on a lake. It’s important to take the time to ensure that your boat is in good shape before heading out on your next adventure. These are our top tips on taking your boat out of storage.

How is the Engine?

Many boats have an engine. If your boat has been in winter boat storage, it’s important to make sure that the engine is in tip-top shape before heading out on the water. Check the battery to see if it needs to be charged or replaced. This may be the case especially if it’s been in boat storage for a few seasons. Fill up the tank, start the engine, and listen to see if it’s running smoothly. It’s also important to check the oil and perform an oil change if needed. You should also check the spark plugs, coolant, and filters.

Inspect the Hull and Propellers When You Take Your Boat Out of Storage

Capitalize on the fact that your boat is out of the water and use this opportunity to check the hull. Inspect the hull to ensure that there are no visible cracks on the hull. Check the screws to see if they are tight. You should also inspect the propellers for any dents or cracks when you take your boat out of storage. Clean any dirt or debris that may have accumulated.

Check All Electronic Components

Look at all electrical components on the boat. Wires and electronic parts may corrode over time. If you see any signs of corrosion, hire a qualified technician to determine the extent of the corrosion and repair it if needed.

Is Your Safety Gear Up to Date?

It’s very important to ensure that all safety gear is in good shape before you head out on the water. You should always have enough lifejackets on board for all people who may be on board. You should also have a fire extinguisher and a first-aid kit. Electronic devices such as radio and GPS should be inspected and in good working order.
